Bower Guest House

Forty square metres on a rural block, built for parents who visit for a fortnight at a time and did not want to be in the main house.

It is one room with a bathroom behind a joinery wall. The bed faces east into the treeline, the kitchenette faces the main house, and a pair of doors at either end turn the whole thing into a breezeway when they are both open.

The building sits on six screw piles, touching the ground as little as possible. No slab, no excavation, no drainage works — which is most of why a building this small was affordable at all.

Cladding is corrugated Zincalume, unpainted, chosen because it will go the same grey as the machinery shed forty metres away rather than pretending to be a different kind of building.
